Twelve Mile Beach

Out of all of the places I have visited in the U.P., Twelve Mile Beach on the shore of Lake Superior near Munising is definitely one of my favorites. Not only is this beach beautiful, it is a great beach for rock picking and picture taking. One of the things that make it so amazing is its remote location. It is at least fifteen miles from the nearest town. One time when we were there, we didn’t see another person for eight hours. We felt like the beach was all ours. The smooth, vividly colored jasper, chert, and occasional agates that litter the beach are definitely worth bending down to get a closer look at. It's hard not to fill your pockets with your favorites.

One of my favorite things about this beach is that if you walk far enough, the sand and rocks are eventually replaced by the most amazing purple, orange and ivory shale that you have every seen. The shale is smooth and its unique shapes and texture make for some very interesting pictures. When I think of the beautiful places that I have been in my life, Twelve Mile Beach not only comes to mind, it sits very comfortable at the top of my list.

  3. Exquisite photgraphy! I have been to each of these places (except for the private falls) and my photos don't even begin to show the beauty. Have you considered submitting to National Geographic!? (seriously, you are that good).

  4. Thank you for the awesome complement. My wife has always said that taking pictures for National Geographic would be her dream job. We love photography. It's easy to take great pictures when the subject is so beautiful.

  5. Brett how far is this beach from the waterfalls? I think I'm going to go here too! Do you have to hike a long trail to get to the beach? Is it easy to find? I agree with the above comments, you are a great photography!

  6. There are 17 waterfalls in and around Munising. So the answer to your question really depends on which waterfall you are talking about. In my opinion, everything around Munising is relatively close. I think Twelve Mile Beach is about 10 miles east of Munising. There isn't a long hike to the beach. In the place that we parked it was just a short walk down some stairs, and the beach was right there. From where we parked the truck and then started walking on the beach, it was about a mile to the location where we took these pictures. You should definitely visit Munising. We are planning on going there this summer for sure.
